In 1782, King Rama I decided to relocate the capital of Siam from the Thonbrui to Bangkok. Needing a residence, royal palace and center of government, King Rama ordered the construction of the Grand Palace. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, King Rama’s personal place of worship, was completed in 1785, and the Grand Palace saw its first coronation during that year.

The complex is immense, and visitors will find a wealth of things to tour, from the beautifully decorated royal reception halls to the throne halls used by kings and queens for centuries. The history of this place lays heavy in the air. Coronations, weddings and funerals of all sorts of Thai dignitaries were performed in these hallowed halls.

Although the Grand Palace is no longer the residence of the king, and hasn’t been since the turn of the 20th century, it is still used for royal ceremonies. The Grand Palace is a national treasure and a true Bangkok must-see. Keep in mind that this is a sacred spot. Tread carefully and respectfully. A strict dress code is also enforced, requiring very modest dress for women, and sleeves and long pants for men. Socks are also required.
